What to do if the AC fails or power goes out in extreme heat

Do these in order. The goal for the next hour is to keep people safe, not diagnose the equipment.

Get people and pets into reliable cooling. Move infants, older adults, pregnant people, people with chronic conditions, and anyone taking heat-sensitive medicines first. Check on neighbors who live alone, and never leave anyone or a pet in a parked vehicle.
Cool down while arranging the move. Drink water unless a medical professional limits your fluids, use cool wet cloths, close blinds, avoid the oven, and wait in the coolest room. A fan alone is not enough in a very hot room.
Act on heat exhaustion. Heavy sweating, weakness, cramps, headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or fainting mean move to a cool place, loosen clothing, use cool wet cloths, and give small sips only if the person is fully awake. Get medical help if symptoms worsen or do not improve.

The Maricopa Association of Governments coordinates the regional Heat Relief Network with cities, the county, nonprofits, faith groups, businesses, and other partners. The regular season runs from May 1 through September 30, and the map changes as sites join or report updates.
