How Cold Should Your AC Blow in Arizona? Try This Cooling Check

If the house feels warm even though the AC has been running, you can take four indoor readings without opening the equipment. The calculator below does only the arithmetic. It does not tell you whether refrigerant, airflow, ducts, controls, insulation, or equipment sizing are correct.
Take four readings
Let the central AC run steadily in cooling mode before measuring. Use the same thermometer for both air readings. Measure at a large return grille and then at a nearby supply vent. Do not open equipment panels or touch electrical or refrigerant components.

Enter four Fahrenheit readings between 35°F and 130°F before calculating.
Your cooling snapshot
Save those four readings and the time of day if you end up requesting service. They give a technician a clearer starting point than “it feels warm.”
What does the temperature drop mean?
An air conditioner moves heat rather than simply producing a fixed vent temperature. Carrier’s cooling-cycle guidance describes the compressor, refrigerant, coils, and blower working together to remove heat from indoor air and circulate cooled air through the home.
That means a supply reading that is cooler than the return reading shows that the air changed as it passed through the system. It does not prove that airflow, refrigerant charge, duct delivery, or equipment sizing are correct. ENERGY STAR’s quality-installation guidance specifically treats airflow, refrigerant charge, duct leakage, and proper sizing as separate things that need to be evaluated.
That is why this page does not label one household number as proof that your AC is healthy or broken.
Three patterns worth writing down
The supply air is not cooler than the return air
Repeat the measurement after the system has been cooling steadily and make sure you measured the return and supply in the right places. If the supply reading still is not cooler, that is useful information to include when you request service. The measurement does not identify the failed part.
The air gets cooler, but the house stays above the thermostat setting
Cooling the air at the equipment and cooling the whole house are not the same question. Airflow, duct delivery, heat entering the home, controls, and system capacity can all affect room temperature. The result changes a lot from one check to another
Write down the readings and the time rather than trying to adjust refrigerant or equipment settings yourself. A qualified technician can measure airflow, refrigerant charge, and other system conditions that this homeowner check does not collect.
Why outdoor temperature is not part of this calculation
A very hot Phoenix afternoon increases the heat your house has to fight, but outdoor temperature is not the other half of the return-to-supply calculation. This tool compares air entering and leaving the cooling system, then separately compares the indoor temperature with the thermostat setting.
The first question is whether the equipment is changing the air temperature. The second is whether the entire house can hold the thermostat setting under the current heat load. This cooling check records both pieces without pretending they answer every HVAC question.

If the house is still too warm
You do not need to diagnose the system before asking for help. Include the four readings above, whether the temperature is still rising, whether airflow feels weak or normal, and anything else you noticed without opening the equipment.
